Alexander Phaneuf and Or Amsalan have brought their incredible baking skills to Culver City with Lodge Bread, a small bakery dedicated to big loaves. Their dedication to organically grown, seasonal whole grains put through a naturally levened process results in a selection of bread that has drawn raves from chefs and ordinary eaters alike. At the counter, you'll find cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, a muesli bowl and cookies, along with loaves of seeded country, whole wheat, spelt and red quinoa wheat. Sunday night is pizza night from 5-8pm—just be sure to get there early, since pies sell out fast.

The best bread in Los Angeles. The care that goes into each and every loaf is apparent in everything they serve: from a chunk of bread ripped directly from the loaf on the way home (because you just can't wait) to the rye they serve with the smoked fish platter to every pastry in between. Do yourself a favor and consult the daily specials and seasonal homemade jams before ordering. My go-to is the smoked fish plate, served with the most spectacular rye bread and perfectly pickled vegetables.

I wish I lived close enough to Lodge - I'd come here every day if I could. Not only are there loaves of bread some of the very best in the city, but what they do with that dough for more substantial dishes is incredible. I recently tried a ricotta and jam toast, and every ingredient seemed elevated in some way. Plus, the staff is super friendly, and the music they play is on point.
