This traditional Japanese bakery has been open in Los Angeles (though not at this location) for more than 100 years. Mikawaya offers a plethora of pastries in this retail shop, but is probably best known for its famous Mochi Ice Cream, available in flavors varying from mango to green tea.

If you are longing for a Japanese, satisfying dessert, ikawaya’s Mochi ice cream shop hits the spot. You’ve probably seen their boxed mochi ice cream boxes at Trader Joe’s and many other markets.

They’ve taken it a step further with their “mochilato”, simply mochi + gelato. The colors and flavors catch the eye and it’s hard to choose just 1 or 2. I went with chocolate hazelnut, and returned a couple of times to try other flavors, still holding out for plum!

Mochi!!!! One of my absolute favorites and when fused with ice cream? Sign me up!

Mikawaya is a classic go to dessert place no matter how full I am where I get my Mochi Ice Cream.  It used to be only $1 but in recent years, I think it's about $1.25.  They also have Mochilato which is gelato on the inside.  I personally like ice cream in my mochi but it's nice they have options.

My go to flavor is always the Green Tea but I love the Black Sesame and Red Bean one.  Truly a simple dessert that is absolutely delicious!
