An elegant throwback to the early 20th century, when robber barons met over thick steaks and thicker cigar smoke. The bargain-hunter's secret is the breakfast menu (available 24 hours a day): among the wonderful spins on eggy standards is a great Creole benedict.

I'm completely enamored with this place, and it's not entirely due to the food. Yes, some of the food is good—the pancakes are fluffy and large; the sausages, which seem to taste even better at 3am, are spicy; and the bread basket they hand out is phenomenal, especially when each slice is swiped with their homemade butter. But it's also the quiet, impeccable service, and the dreamlike state you might find yourself in when you enter this throwback restaurant. Le sigh.
