What a hidden gem. Fern Dell already feels like Griffith Park's shaded little secret—though it does get crowded on weekends—and this place really adds to that "I can't believe I'm still in LA" ambiance. The menu is small, but the pastries and sandwiches are great, particularly the avocado.
Trails Cafe is one of my favorite places in LA. When you sit at the picnic benches under the trees, you don't feel like you're anywhere near the city. But then you overhear people discussing scripts and casting, and you realize you're sitting right next to one of the biggest producers in the city, and you remember exactly where you are. Order a slice of pie or a pastry (the lavender shortbread is especially good) as a reward if you hiked up to the Observatory. The avocado sandwiches are really, really good—but the star is the homemade granola. I think it's the best I've had in LA.
