As one of the best NY imports to arrive in LA recently, Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream is taking their beloved dessert to our city streets. The company, founded by Pete and Ben Van Leeuwen and Laura O'Neill, uses the finest ingredients to make star quality ice cream in continually rotating flavors, such as pistachio, earl grey tea, espresso and mint chip. Their latest addition, vegan ice cream, flips the stereotype of lackluster dairy-free ice cream on its head—here, the use of raw cocoa butter makes it creamy and rich (try the chocolate peanut butter!). The Van Leeuwen truck can be found on Abbot Kinney throughout the week, as well as Little Tokyo and in front of the LACMA.

Confession: I'm not vegan so this ice cream didn't do much for me at all. I tried this based on a recommendation from someone and sadly was disappointed!
Perhaps I haven't had vegan ice cream before and didn't know what to expect. I'm a big fan of the creaminess of ice cream and I didn't get that from matcha green tea flavor I had. It was very chalky and dry - if that makes sense.
Also the price points for ice cream is a bit outrageous. I'll stick to my non vegan ice cream :)
Whenever I spot this truck, it's takes a conscious effort not to immediately run over and spend $10 on all the scoops. I even like their vegan variety, which at other places usually takes on an icy consistency but here is just as creamy and smooth as their dairy-based flavors. They have a new spot in the Arts District which I'm dying to check out.
