This long-standing indie book shop has been a staple amidst LA bookies since 1975. The variety of stock at Book Soup is huge and diverse (60,000 titles to be exact), even if the space itself is a little squeezed (it's easy to get lost!). The newsstand is well stocked with domestic and international papers and magazines, while the floor-to-ceiling shelves pack tomes specializing in art, film, photography, music, controversial non-fiction and literary fiction. Tip: make sure to check out the impressive section on LA history, architecture and lore.

Book Soup is everything you want your favorite indie bookshop to be. It's packed from floor to ceiling with books you may or may not have seen before, and the shelves are dotted all over with handwritten notes of recommendation from the witty, book-loving staffers.

Book Soup is a supremely undervalued, independent bookstore in LA. I'll go out of my way to buy from Book Soup because it's one of the few, remaining independent stores in the city. Its layout is inviting, cozy, and snug, but in an old, antique-y, "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore" type of way. I'm a huge fan of the employee recommendations that pepper the store in each individual category - super helpful and appreciated. I could spend hours in here. Pro tip: Current best sellers in the front!
