Griffith Park is made up of over 4,210 acres, so this little slice of greenery off the 134 Freeway near Glendale often gets overlooked as you drive by. You might not even have noticed that it’s named for silver screen star Bette Davis, who used to live across the street and ride horses nearby. In celebration of the actress’s life, the Friends of Griffith Park are hosting a morning of free activities for nature lovers. You can birdwatch by the L.A. River with the Feminist Bird Club of Los Angeles—herons, grebes and osprey are known to frequent the stretch—watch equestrian demonstrations, chat with a historian and explore the picnic area’s Miyawaki-inspired micro-forest.
