L.A. has changed immeasurably since 1921, when this event was first staged as an agricultural fair. However, the perennially popular event still has farm-friendly appeal (livestock beauty contests, local produce) alongside the more modern acrobats, wine tastings, exhibitions and concerts.

There is s much going on at the LA County Fair - I'd forgotten the sheer amount of activities until I'd gone back last year. You can go catch a concert (tickets to a concert allows you into the fair free), go on rides, visit the animals and the farm, go to the horse races, shop, dance, view art, go to the circus, play games and did I mention the crazy fair food? You will encounter fried foods and combinations you would find nowhere else.

Last year I had the most fun watching food come out of Chicken Charlies, where they even had a deep fried foie gras Twinkie. The light show, Luminasia, explored the colorful world of Chinese lanterns, animals from Chinese astrology, Chinese folklore,  famous world and local landmarks, icons of Los Angeles, and all types of plants and animals. I saw butterflies mating and flying around at Mojos Wild and Crazy Lagoon, a butterfly sanctuary. And pet the most adorable goats in the Big Red Barn.

In between, my group grabbed some bites and caught one of the concerts. The fair manages to intrigue everyone of all ages and interests, with endless possibilities.

I'ma sucker for a good fair and LA County Fair is one of the best. You can get your fortune told (which I did), go on rides, see farm animals, head to a bar and grub on delicious food all in one place! It's a little pricey but it's a great time. Just be sure to hydrate because it's usually really hot and bring some sunscreen!
