Get your Shakespeare and nature fix all at once while escaping the city for a few hours this summer at the beautiful Theatricum Botanicum. This charming open-air amphitheatre is nestled deep in picturesque Topanga Canyon and is presenting a number of mostly classical plays (with its usual emphasis on Shakespeare) this summer on its 40th anniversary. Choose between critically lauded Taming of the Shrew, Merlin, A Royal Affair, Joyce Carol Oates’ Tone Clusters, and the Theatricum’s signature production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Feel free to bring along a picnic to eat in the lovely garden ahead of the show, tote a cushion for extra comfort (or rent one for $1) and don’t forget to pack a hat for matinee shows, blankets for evening ones. Catching a play at this rustic hideaway is sure to be a magical experience.
