Parking lots turned into parks—it's the latest transformation sweeping LA, and who could complain after setting eyes on Santa Monica's Tongva Park? This idyllic and well-designed ocean-adjacent oasis harbors a playground, meadows, waterfalls, walking paths and a conch-like, wireframe lookout to the Pacific. Artist Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle's kinetic sculpture Weather Field anchors the park as a minimal, serene and instantly memorable landmark.

While very much out in the open, this park still remains a great kept secret. Well designed with plenty of different spaces to choose from, Tongva Park doesn't seem to get crowded even on busy weekends. Set above the road, it feels like you're a world away from busy Ocean Avenue, but still very close to the ocean. Great place to sit and read or enjoy lunch when you need a break from the touristy Santa Monica crowds.

This is a really fantastically designed park, and it's practically empty compared to the other outdoors locations in Santa Monica. The ocean viewpoint is great, as is the kinetic sculpture. If you're taking the Expo Line into Santa Monica, take a walk through here if you're headed anywhere toward the beach.
