Time Out says

A key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Motely was a painter of modern life as seen in the nightclubs and streets of African-American neighborhoods. Often focusing on jostling throngs of passersby or revelers crowded on dance floors, Motley combined Expressionism and Social Realism into a dynamic style that captured the spirit of 20th-century urban culture during the the Roaring Twenties and beyond.
