Carina Brandes, "Wilkommen"

The artist describes her black-and-white photographs as "fever dreams," and indeed they're surreal and off-centered in a manner that suggests a troubled sleep. The artist herself appears in many of the images—emerging from a lake wearing an owl mask, for instance, or nude with her body coated in black paint. They cover some of the same psychosexual terrain explored in the work of the late Francesca Woodman.
