Fragmentation as a necessary condition of identity might be the best way to describe the work of the single-name artist and filmmaker. This show includes paintings that have bits and pieces of found fabric sewn to random spots on the canvas, along with intimations of facial features. Carter also presents a 12-minute excerpt from his film feature Maladies, which he wrote and directed. It stars James Franco and Catherine Keener as brother-sister artists in the 1960s, conflicted about life and their place in it—especially Keener's character, who likes to dress up as a man.
