The Puerto Rican–born artist presents new paintings with a familiar subject—namely, midcentury-modern hotels of the type that welcomed tourists to various Caribbean nations during the Eisenhower-Kennedy years. In terms of color, mood and texture, however, his compositions present a somewhat deracinated view of paradise, one that subtextually evokes cold-climate haves exploiting tropical have-nots. In a similar vein, the artist also exhibits enlarged sculptural renderings of hotel-bar swizzle sticks.
