Dating from the early 1980s, this series of paintings of the eponymous portrait subjects exemplify the artist's signature use of aggressive Expressionist brushwork as well as his propensity to hang figures upside down. Although the argument for the latter has always been that it makes Baselitz's paintings seem more abstract, it makes them unnerving as well.
