Born in 1930, this Sudanese painter is one of the pioneering figures of modernism in the Middle East and North Africa. Now in his eighties and still going strong, El-Salahi leavens Islamic, African and Arab artistic traditions with motifs borrowed from such 20th-century artists as Picasso, Klee and Míro. Now living in England after political difficulties forced him to leave Sudan, El-Salahi was the subject of a 2013 retrospective at the Tate Modern, the first ever accorded an African-born artist. This show, which features quasi-figurative paintings and work on paper, represents his gallery debut.
