The murky, industrial-chic environs of Brown’s expansive Harlem space is the perfect match for the work of this Greek-born artist, who died in 2017 at age 80 after a long career as a principle figure in Italian Arte Povera. Though seemingly abstract, Kounellis’s dark, brooding work—which repurposed materials and objects typically found in factories and scrapyards—to convey the collective trauma inflicted on Europe by World War II. The offerings here include key historical works, as well as pieces produced during the final years of his life.
