John Gerrard, "Exercise"

Gerrard aims to update the landscape genre for the digital age with works he calls "simulations." He stages events at a particular location, which he documents in still photos. He then uses gaming software to stitch these images into filmlike sequences, which are either projected on the wall or mounted within boxy displays that recall video monitors crossed with picture frames. The simulations here evoke military exercises in the desert.
