Camnitzer is that curious case of a well-known underknown: a Conceptual Art pioneer who has lived and work in New York City for three decades, yet remains appreciated mostly by critics, curators and other artists. Although born in Lübeck, Germany in 1937, Camnitzer was raised in Uruguay, which accounts for this retrospective at El Museo. His birth in Nazi Germany, and his personal acquaintance with Latin American dictatorships, also accounts, perhaps, for the political thrust of his work, which includes installation, printmaking, drawing and photography.
