Merz, who is the wife of artist Mario Merz, was the only female member of the Italian Arte Povera movement during the late 1960s, and her work was largely overlooked at the time. But since the advent of feminism, at least, her efforts have received wider attention. The pieces here, dating from the mid-1990s to the present, both conform to and depart from the Povera aesthetic, the latter being especially true of her figurative paintings and portraits.
