Time Out says

Perhaps because she was part of a cohort of artists who came to New York via Buffalo in the 1970s—a group that included Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo—Nancy Dwyer is generally associated with the Pictures Generation. But while her early works were based on image appropriation, her strategy evolved into a text-based one, in which words or phrases were punned upon visually in a series of paintings and sculptures (naps, for instance, spelled out in soft pillowy cushions forming a kind of couch). Since moving upstate in the 1990s, Dwyer has been out of the art-world limelight; this survey should reacquaint viewers with her semantic ironies.
