This show celebrates the career of the enigmatic downtown doyenne Nico—a.k.a. Christa Päffgen (1938–1988)—in the years bracketing her famed involvement with the Velvet Underground. Photographs by Jerry Schatzberg capture Nico as an aspiring model and actor newly arrived in New York, while a 1981 video of Squat Theatre's legendary performance piece Mr. Dead and Mrs. Free features Nico singing a jaded-sounding rendition of the Sinatra classic "New York, New York."
