In the U.S., the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s were tumultuous decades, in which the crush of events destabilized everyday experience. So it’s appropriate that this show focuses on the convergence of Surrealism and realism during the interwar years. George Tooker, Edward Hopper and Yves Tanguy are some of the featured artists in this roundup of 120 works from the Whitney’s collection.
