Robert Mapplethorpe, "50 Americans"

Time Out says

The title doesn't refer to some long-lost project by Mapplethorpe (who wasn't particularly known for such prosaic-sounding subject matter, anyway), but rather to a curatorial premise: The gallery found an individual from each state of the Union to choose a Mapplethorpe image (from a group of 2000) that most resonated with him or her personally. Some people were already familiar with the artist's work; some were not. Each photo is accompanied by a text explaining why the person who selected it found it compelling. Apparently, in the future, everyone will be a curator for 15 minutes, and the future is now.
