Sam Francis, "Paintings and Works on Paper"

Francis (1923–1994) created exuberantly colorful and lyrical abstractions, formulating a style that's as indelible as any in American art. He's remembered here with 19 works on paper and two compositions on canvas that are taken mostly from his "Edge" series, produced in the 1960s. Here, his characteristically thin and chromatically intense applications of paints form bands around the perimeter of the painting, leaving a large white void in the center.
