On August 9, sand became a sculptural medium once again as arts organization Creative Time brushed off its artist sandcastle building competition for the second year in a row. The event, which takes place out at Rockaway Beach, invited ten teams of selected artists to dig in, and do their creative best to transform the lazy, hazy summer pastime into something special—if still ephemeral. Among the entrants, Christopher Robbins created a fortification, complete with a catapult painted safety orange; Duke Riley offered a sand-castle vision of a White Castle restaurant (the competition’s sponsor); Esperanza Mayobre sculpted a life-sized life raft; and Marc Andre Robinson put some teeth into his land shark version of
Jaws.
