The Met offers an education in collecting by one of the American masters of early-20th-century Modernism. In addition to being among the key figures in the development of photography as an art form, Stieglitz was a gallerist and a promoter of modern art in all mediums. Besides exhibiting Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancusi, Wassily Kandinsky and Georgia O'Keeffe, among others, Stieglitz bought key works, which were later donated to the Met. The sampling of gems here includes Brancusi's Sleeping Muse, O'Keeffe's Black Iris and Charles Demuth's proto–Pop Art I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold.
