The 60 paintings and calligraphies on view reflect a traumatic period in Chinese history, when the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) was overthrown by invading Manchu tribesmen, and long-held hopes for a Ming restoration by loyalists (never realized) were expressed in these exquisite artworks.
