Founded in 1985 by Elise Longm with partners Mary Ann Banerji, Marc Eichen, Jonathan Stewart and David Steiger Wolfe, the Gowanus Arts Building (originally called the Gowanus Arts Exchange) was once a derelict soap factory. Now, it provides work space for visual artists, musicians, dancers, actors, a recording studio and an architectural firm.
