Tony Smith (1912–1980) spent 20 years as an architect before turning to painting in the mid-1950s, but his true calling was sculpture. He created monumental forms with faceted sides that often recalled crystals, as well as elements of engineering like arches or bridges. His work is often lumped together with work by the Minimalists, but it was a thing apart. This show pairs his sculpture Source (1967), which was initially exhibited at Documenta IV in Kassel, Germany, with a large untitled painting from 1962.
