Moore (1953–2002), whose life and career were cut short by AIDS, was a figurative painter who trafficked in a sort of symbol-laden Surrealism, redolent with the anxieties that quite understandably occupied his own mind. But his work has a far gentler tone than that of his contemporary David Wojnarowicz, who was similarly driven by the furies of a disease that devastated a generation of gay men.
