A member of the "Sausalito Six," Kuhlman (1918–2009) was a noted figure in West Coast modernism as it existed before the 1960s. A student of Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko and Richard Diebenkorn, Kuhlman—a Minnesota native—pursued a distinctive take on Abstract Expressionism marked by a certain Northern Californian terroir.
