Alexander "Xanti" Schawinsky (1904–1979) was a first-generation Bauhaus artist, but his work was largely forgotten until its rediscovery in recent years. It encompassed drawing, design, photography and performance (he was a member of the Bauhaus band). This show focuses on two bodies of drawings dating from World War II, which Schawinsky rode out in New York after a stint at the legendary Black Mountain College in the late ’30s. Both series involve an Arcimboldo-like treatment of heads, with "Faces of War," for example, cobbled out of tanks and other destructive machinery. The result combines a Surrealist sensibility with impeccable draftsmanship.
