Time Out says
This show represents the American debut of this Chinese painter, whose style—thinly applied paint that vaguely hints at an art of memory—is not dissimilar to the work of Luc Tuymans and Marlene Dumas. Instead of images fraught with intimations of violence or loaded history, however, Zhang seems to focus on prosaic objects that speak to his own conflicted experience as a person who moved from the countryside to the cities, like millions of other Chinese.
