We won’t fault you for thinking you’re strolling through Tokyo’s Harajuku neighborhood as you enter this exhibit. After all, the walls of the gallery are covered in enormous images of street scenes from Japan’s most fashionable city, while ensembles from some of the country’s more innovative designers—including Undercover and Comme des Garçons—line a runway on either side of the space. About 90 outfits are on view, covering the full breadth of Japanese style; you’ll see a sleek gown by Issey Miyake, outrageous Gothic Lolita costumes designed by h.NAOTO and a cosplay outfit depicting a maid with cat ears, among other items.
