Though the famous French painter is often cited for his seminal work with color, the focus of this exhibit is the artist's abstract, largely black and gray pieces from 1913 to 1917. Visitors will find some 120 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, including Bathers by a River, which Matisse himself called a "pivotal" work of that period.
