With Henry Ward Beecher, the brother of abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, as its first preacher in 1847, Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims soon became known as “Grand Central Depot” in the chain of safe havens for fleeing slaves. It continues to be a vibrant religious and community center today.
