"Tradition Transformed: Tibetan Artists Respond"

This is the first display of contemporary Tibetan art ever to go on view in NYC. The purpose of art in Tibet is to replicate the essence and image of religious deities, and the nine featured artists imbue their depictions of Buddha with modern sensibilities and concerns. Kids can delight in Gonkar Gyatso's L.A. Confidential, an image of Buddha in which the god is covered by small, bright stickers. Tenzing Rigdol's Excuse Me Sir, Which Way Is to My Home? features a Buddha cut from a map of the U.S. and surrounded by cologne bottles, cars and iPhones, all modern stand-ins for traditional temptations.
