Cocktailgating 101

We break down everything you need to throw the perfect cocktailgate

Time Out in association with Stoli

We love a tailgate here at Time Out. The thrilling anticipation of a great football game. The good feels of being in the company of fellow fans. The heavy smell of sweet and sticky BBQ. And, most of all, the taste of a delicious cocktail of your choice; perhaps an icy cold Stoli Moscow Mule on a warm fall day or a spiked Hot Chocolate with some delicious vanilla vodka to keep you warm on a blustery December afternoon.

Yes, you read that right: Not a beer. Not a wine. When we tailgate, we are elevating  the traditional pregame ritual into a to a whole new experience called cocktailgating, and its more than just a new choice in drinking.

Here’s everything you need to start #cocktailgating like a pro.

The vodka

Rain or shine, warm or bitterly cold, beer is the popular drink of choice for most tailgaters—buy why? It’s heavy to drink, cold to handle when it’s blustery out, and you can’t do much to spice it up. On the other hand, with vodka and a creative mind, the possibilities are endless. Vodka is an excellent base for easy-drinking cocktails, which is important if you’re planning to make this cocktailgating session a long one. And it's flexible, if you want to keep things interesting. Go with the vodka, Stoli, for a premium choice.

The (hot) cocktails

A cocktailgate is an upgrade, but still keep in mind that ingredients need to be able to travel and you’re not going to have a bar full of fancy gadgetry to call on when it comes to drinks-o-clock. So, keep it simple and delicious. Is it beanie and mittens weather? Then mix Stoli Vanilla into a hot chocolate or make a Stoli and Cider (exactly what it says it is—so simple!). Bonus: You can customize your Stoli and Cider by bringing along a bunch of different Stoli flavors to mix.

The (cold) cocktails

If it’s warmer out, make yourself a Bloody Mary featuring Stoli, or a Moscow Mule (all you need is ginger beer, fresh lime juice, Stoli and—if you want to get a bit fancy—some pewter mugs). Just like the Stoli and Cider, the Bloody Mary is infinitely customizable, which adds an element of fun for your fellow cocktailgaters. Bring a bunch of different garnishes for people to use in their Bloody Marys, from different fruits and veg to pile on top, to strips of bacon to crisp up on the grill for a meaty X-factor.

The food

We know: Your instinct is to hit the grill. But if you’re upgrading your drink experience, it only seems fit your food selection should follow suit. Don’t get too fancy, but do get inventive. Try chili—perfect for this time of year and easy to make—with a twist: combine pork and beef for a bit of extra punch and scatter broken-up tortilla chips in the mix. Or, put a spin on that artichoke dip recipe your mom passed down to you by wrapping it in pastry with a bit of cheese for the most delicious hot pocket you’ll ever put in your mouth. Prepare everything at home so it’s easy to heat and serve on-site.

The tunes

The key here is to have a solid playlist, and a lengthy one—you don't want to be going back and forth to your device to search for new songs or restart. And be sure to have a set of portable and outdoors-worthy wireless speakers so that your tunes can be heard, no matter what the elements are up to.

The games

Keep it simple and classic. There is no better cocktailgating game than cornhole: It combines maximum fun with maximum convenience—a Moscow Mule or Stoli and Cider in one hand, a beanbag in the other.
