The midtown Irish pub Galway Hooker has opened a four-story sister location in the West Village, complete with a fireplace, billiard table and imported decor from the Emerald Isle—including a confessional box. On tap is an international selection of suds, while an extensive spirit collection boasts the prized Midleton whiskey from County Cork. To go with all the alcohol: recipes from owner Niamh Conway’s mother, as well as standards like the “Hooker” burger with Irish bacon, cheddar and a fried egg.

I rank Galway as a step above a gimmicky frat bar but a step below Wilfie and Nell; it also geographically nestles between these two options (all of the bars behind NYU and Wilfie). On the weekends, Galway gets packed, so I usually steer clear, but it is a great option for weeknights. On Mondays - Wednesdays the bar is fairly lively without being too packed. They have a special $8 food menu on those days; the options are fairly unhealthy bar food, but the servings are the perfect size - I ordered the burger with bleu cheese and while it was greasy bar food, it was still pretty good and didn't leave me feeling sick as bar food is wont to do. They also have a drink special (which I believe a lot of the bars in the area carry out - I know Fiddlesticks does, too) called Made In America - any liquor or beer made in America is $5. If you're looking for a chill weekday bar that doesn't feel completely deserted (and is super close to the 1 train), definitely recommend Galway.
