There is no mistaking the theme at this Upper West Side bar: Framed literary verses and portraits of writing greats hang from exposed-brick walls. Specialty cocktails bear names like the Edgar Allan Poe (vodka, triple sec and lemon) and the Jack Kerouac (tequila, blue curaçao, fresh lemon and lime), while Guinness—poured with a shamrock carefully drawn into its foam—anchors the 13 taps and an extensive Irish whiskey selection that would make any heavy-drinking writer proud. Grab a classic from the small in-house library to skim before the rowdier night crowd arrives.

The Dead Poet is a great place to go if you'd like to have an audible conversation. The food is pretty varied- tacos! fancy french fries! burgers! -and the prices [for New York] are fairly reasonable, the decor is literary [squee!] and I will say that the truffle fries are pretty damn good. It's definitely an unpretentious and laid back spot, with a good beer and cocktail list [quite sad that I didn't try any of the cocktails on my visit].

That being said, it's not the most exciting place in the world, and it is quite a narrow space, so it feels a bit cramped, especially if you're sitting in the back.

If you're lucky enough to have the same birthday as a famous poet, get ready to drink for free all day!

Probably the narrowest bar I have ever been in, a total pain to squeeze through and get to the bar during busy hours. But if you can get past a few minutes of suffering, you'll surely enjoy their solid cocktails and well-priced brews. Theme (dead poets) aside, it's an unpretentious divey bar, and especially enjoyable if you can hunker down at a table in the back. I've only had the food when I was super intoxicated, so naturally I thought everything (fried) was delicious (because, fried). This is a great go-to, and a solid alternative to next-door Jake's Dilemma.
