Thanks to a new law that goes into effect on January 1, businesses in New York with at least 20 employees will be required to provide their workers with pre-tax MetroCards. The $116.50 monthly cards, taken out of paychecks before taxes, could save you up to $400 a year.

The legislation, which was pushed by Riders Alliance, is expected to raise the numbers of New Yorkers eligible for the tax break by 450,000. The current amount of works taking advantage of the service is 750,000.

The new mandate is expected to affect 22,000 businesses and those that don't comply by July will be hit with a $250 fine.
