Music festival Basilica Soundscape is a yearly highlight for anyone looking for something a bit different than the typical fest. There's no mud, no standing in a shadeless sun-baked field, no distracting corporate sponsorships. Sounds nice, right? How is all that possible? Well, the performances are inside, for one, held in a spacious, rustic former 19th-century factory in Hudson, NY. The shows happen mostly at night, and by September 16th–18th, when it takes place, you'll be eager to soak in the cool late-summer air. The booking draws from a variety of genres, with post-rock, black metal and indie-folk all represented. That diversity is important: As there are no competing sets to choose from, you get to hear it all. Expect to listen patiently during readings (Amber Tamblyn), thrash during punk sets (Hank Wood & The Hammerheads) and bask-in sounds that are calming and transcendent (Mary Lattimore) and brutal and abrasive (Uniform). It's the sort of experience that rewards open ears and fosters intimate connections with the music. All that, and only a short train ride away.
