When John Waters welcomed us into his West Village apartment, we made ourselves quite comfortable—observing his spotless kitchen, and then delving into a conversation that touched on everything from the cult director's amateur high school films to his relationship with longtime friend and collaborator, the late Divine. While his retrospective at Lincoln Center (Sep 5–14) will undoubtedly shed light on his career, Waters shared with us a few things you can't catch on the screen, like why he got booted from NYU (for smoking pot), where he'd really like to live (Baltimore) and making two people very proud (his mom and dad).

Plus, in the spirit of New York Fashion Week, flip through this issue for a fall fashion fix courtesy of drag luminary Courtney Act (born Shane Jenek), who models both men's and women's looks. We've also got the backstory on why Ira Glass is swapping his mic for dancing shoes, a breakdown of the new collaborative book Women in Clothes and five reasons to see cabaret queen Bridget Everett. Also: a Q&A with Rupert Grint, details on the Free Stand Up Festival (Sep 8–12) and a look at the NYC restaurants reimagining poutin. That should hold you over 'til next week, right?
