Each week, we take two New Yorkers who swear they're totally undateable, and put our matchmaking skills to the test. Afterward, we find out what went well on their date, and what went horribly, horribly wrong.

Why they're single:
James: He’s very shy and is constantly working or in rehearsals.
Lara: She loves being single and hasn’t found anyone worth spending a lot of time on yet.

Ideal date:
James: Walking around the city and maybe popping into a dive bar for a drink.
Lara: Someone who shows up on time and doesn’t ghost

THE DATE

First impression
James: “She was definitely my type. We hit it off pretty quickly and had lots to talk about. I thought she was very pretty, friendly and a really nice person.”
Lara:
“He seemed a little flustered when he showed up. I guess he thought he was late, even though he wasn’t. I got a friend vibe immediately, but I was still excited.”

Chemistry
James: “I got more of a short-term dating vibe; she said she wasn’t looking for anything serious. That’s fine with me, because my work comes and goes in waves.”
Lara:
“I was the one asking most of the questions, and I think he was struggling a bit with the conversation here and there. I don’t have an issue talking. I wouldn’t shut up.”

Awkward Moment
James: “We went to a pizza place, and there was a brief minute where she used a knife and fork to eat a slice. At the moment, it scared me a little, but it’s funny now.”
Lara:
“Emmett’s is renowned for its deep-dish pizza, but he said he didn’t like deep-dish, so we just ordered a thin-crust cheese pie. I was like, ‘Ugh. I want more food.’ ”

Afterward
James: “We left the restaurant and walked for a bit. Then she got in a taxi and left, and I went home. We exchanged numbers, and I texted her to say I had a nice evening.”
Lara:
“I realized I left my wallet at the restaurant, so I went back and got my deep-dish pizza. The table next to me heard what happened, and they gave me a slice too.”

Verdict
James: ♥♥♥ “It was a nice evening. She was very intelligent and fun to talk to and hang out with. I would like to see her again, but I guess that’s really more up to her.”
Lara: ♥♥♥ “I’m happy I did it! It was cool to know nothing but his name going in, and he was really nice. But I definitely wouldn’t see it going past that one date.”

Our daters went to Emmett's (50 MacDougal St, 917-639-3571)
