The date: Margaritas and appetizers at El vez (259 Vesey St, 212-233-2500)

First impression
Jeff: “She was bundled up and kept removing layers. I kind of expected her to keep taking off layers until there was just a tiny bunny sitting there.  I thought she was cute.”
Ashton: “I was pumped that he looked nice. He had a beard; I love beards. I could tell he was sensitive. He didn’t come in thinking he’s the greatest thing ever, which was nice.”

Chemistry
Jeff: “There was definite social chemistry.  I’ve kissed girls on the first date before, but the fireworks didn’t go off and that didn’t happen, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”
Ashton: “There’s something there, whether friends or romantic. We didn’t cover normal stuff. I can’t tell you how many siblings he has, but I know his comparison between Salinger and Plath.”

Afterward
Jeff: “I suggested we grab a beer somewhere else, but we wound up at the train, so we just rode together. I put my number in her phone. I wanted the power in her hands.”
Ashton: “At the stop before he had to get off the train, he offered to give me his number. I didn’t know how to respond. He kind of left the ball in my court. We hugged, and he left.”

Awkward Moment
Jeff: “Initially it was kind of weird, because we walked straight to the table together but didn’t even speak. It felt like a long walk to the back of the restaurant.”
Ashton: “I make a lot of facial expressions when I talk—I will concentrate on something and make a weird face. He said he thought he’d done something wrong.”

In three words
Jeff: Ashton is "animated, affable and adorable."
Ashton: Jeff is "funny, intuitive, and well-put-together.”

Verdict
Jeff: “She texted me that night. I was attracted to her, and it was one of the better dates I’ve gone on in a while, so I’d definitely like to pursue it.”
Ashton: “It was pretty successful. He’s super interesting, and I thought he was cute. I’m excited to see beyond this first date, since there was so much awkwardness.”
