In a rare reversal of how these things usually go, a two-acre section of Battery Park that was once asphalt has now been converted into a lush, verdant oasis.

The Battery Oval, a section of Manhattan's southern-most park, will celebrate its grand opening this weekend. The new lawn will be a massive addition (90,000 square feet, to be exact) of green space to the financial district, and should quickly become a go-to spot for spot for FiDi sunbathers.

To mark the occasion, The Battery Conservancy is throwing a festival this weekend with 90 local vendors selling food, crafts and plants around the oval. The booths will encircle the lawn kind of like that big battle scene in this week's Game of Thrones. Except with home-made crafts instead of swords. And less mud, hopefully.

The Battery Fair will run from 10am until 6pm Saturday and Sunday.
