Here's a great way to bleed your wallet dry first thing in the morning. The latest gastro gimmick making waves in the blogosphere is a purple-yam doughnut from Manila Social Club that's been infused with Cristal champagne and lacquered in 24-karat gold. While over-the-top dishes is nothing new, the owners of the Filipino eatery say they've already been selling dozens of these flashy rounds ($100 for one, $1,000 for a dozen) since launching them last week.

To make the treats, dense purple yam is compressed into a mousse filling and injected into the pastry along with a champagne jelly. The sweet icing is also shot with Cristal, and the whole shebang is dusted in flamboyant amounts of gold leaf. Yeesh.
