The news from Nepal just keeps getting worse. Today, a second earthquake struck near Kathmandu, compounding the damage caused by the catastrophic April 25 quake. If you're wondering what you as a New Yorker can do to help, an event at City Winery on Sunday, May 17, seems like a good start. Beginning at 1pm that day, the downtown venue hosts Everest Awakening—A Gathering for Nepal and Beyond, a matinee benefit concert featuring songwriter, author, activist and all-around New York icon Patti Smith. Tickets, available here, run from $40 to $55, and all proceeds benefit RPM's When Disaster Strikes fund. Veteran songman Loudon Wainwright III, wizardly guitarist Kaki King and Smith's daughter, Jesse Paris Smith, are also slated to appear, along with "very special guests." No telling who those might be, but we do know that when Patti Smith hosts a benefit, big names tend to heed her call. Turn up and do your part!
