Art nerds and music fans are buzzing about the announcement of biopic Mapplethorpe. The film will follow the avant-garde photographer Robert Mapplethorpe from his rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989. Matt Smith, who is best known for playing Doctor Who, will play the role of Robert Mapplethorpe. Zosia Marmet, who plays Shoshanna in Girls, will portray Mapplethrope's lover Patti Smith (their compelling relationship was chronicled in Patti Smith's novel Just Kids). Sundance-winning documentary creator Ondi Timoner will be directing.

The casting announcement has stirred controversy, with Mamet being criticized as a one-dimensional actress and Matt Smith's identity so intertwined with The Doctor. We'll have to wait to see how the two do in their roles, as the film is currently in pre-production with no release date as of yet. For now, you can catch Matt Smith in the upcoming Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (hitting theaters Feb 5) and Zosia Mamet in season 5 of Girls (the series returns to HBO on Feb 21).
